Canadore Panthers Battle to Five-Set Thriller Against Georgian Grizzlies

North Bay, ON - The Canadore College women's volleyball team delivered an electric five-set performance on home court Saturday afternoon, pushing the Georgian Grizzlies to the limit before ultimately falling 3–2 in a tightly contested OCAA matchup at the North Bay Campus.

Set scores were 23–25, 25–22, 18–25, 25–20, 18–20, highlighting just how evenly matched the two teams were throughout the entire contest.

The Panthers displayed balanced scoring and gritty defensive pressure, with multiple players stepping up in crucial moments.

Elise Churman led the Canadore offense with a dominant 13 kills on 35 attempts (.200), adding 1 service ace and totaling 15 points on the afternoon.  Kate McKenzie followed with a strong performance of her own, recording 11 kills and 16 digs, while Kassidy Dyer contributed 8 kills1 ace, and 2 block for 11 total points.

Setter Reece Sommerfeld expertly orchestrated the Canadore attack, finishing with 37 assists, while adding 3 kills.

On defense, Shianne Shykoluk was a standout, anchoring the backcourt with 13 digs, helping Canadore stay in long rallies and fuel their transition game.
Peyton Smith also added 4 digs, while the Panthers collectively amassed 79 digs on the match.

The Panthers matched Georgian's intensity from the service line, delivering 4 aces while holding the Grizzlies to extended rallies.
Emily Peltier was particularly efficient, hitting .500 with 4 kills1 ace, and solid play in the front row.

Middle attacker Delainee Rogers added 7 kills on an impressive .300 hitting, contributing a key presence at the net.

After dropping the opening set 23–25, Canadore responded with a composed and confident second set win. Georgian regained momentum in the third before the Panthers once again fought back to take the fourth, forcing a winner-take-all fifth set.

The deciding set was a back-and-forth battle with neither team able to pull away. Ultimately, Georgian edged out the Panthers 20–18, sealing the match in dramatic fashion.

 

The Panthers will look to carry this momentum into their next matchup as they continue OCAA league play.
