Panthers Show Early Promise but Fall to Mohawk at Home
NORTH BAY, ON — The Canadore Panthers men's basketball team showed early signs of growth and resilience on Saturday afternoon, jumping out to a strong first-quarter lead before falling 104–58 to the undefeated Mohawk Mountaineers.
Canadore (0–3) came out energized, feeding off their home crowd and executing efficiently on offense. The Panthers shot an impressive 55.6% in the opening frame, connecting on four three-pointers to take a 26–22 advantage after 10 minutes.
Favour Okonkwo set the tone early with confident shooting from deep, hitting three triples on his way to 9 points and 5 rebounds. Kejon White continued his strong start to the season, leading the Panthers with 16 points and 5 rebounds while attacking the rim and creating opportunities in transition. Royal Egbonkhan and Baron Kabeya added steady production with 9 and 5 points respectively, each contributing on the defensive end as well.
Despite the early momentum, the Panthers faced a difficult stretch in the middle quarters, where Mohawk's pressure defense and rebounding strength shifted the game's tempo. Canadore was held to just 17 combined points in the second and third quarters but continued to compete hard through all four periods.
The Panthers showed improvement in ball movement, recording 14 assists on their 22 made field goals, and continued to find contributions from multiple players off the bench, including Woodli Cime, who added 8 points and two three-pointers.
While the result did not go their way, the team's composure and early energy were positive to build on as the young roster continued to develop chemistry.
Canadore returns to action next weekend, looking to translate their first-quarter success into a full 40-minute performance.
